Object ImageBroken Calculator

The Broken Calculator helps students develop computational fluency by solving problems with a "broken" calculator. For example, a baker packs 315 buns into boxes of 8. How many boxes will the baker need? The division key is broken! Students must find ways to solve the problem, evaluate the solutions, and explain their reasoning.

The Concord Consortium is pleased to announce the availability of web-based professional development courses for elementary and secondary mathematics teachers. These courses belong to a line of SeeingMath™ Elementary and SeeingMath™ Secondary courses that were developed with funding from the U.S. Department of Education's Ready to Teach program.

Following a period of extensive research and testing with teachers nationwide, elementary and secondary courses are now available through our partners: Teachscape and PBS TeacherLine.

Our website contains more information about SeeingMath™ professional development courses, including access to sample videos and interactives.
